KRANKENHAUS PRESENTS
Walks from the Ratty: Hardknott Roman Fort

About Walks from the Ratty: Hardknott Roman Fort

Sunday morning.

Join writer Luke Turner and field artist Rob St John for a walk to the atmospheric remains of a Roman fort. Krankenhaus attendees might not be aware of it, but at the festival, we’re all cavorting with the ghosts of Roman legions. The road from the coastal settlement of Ravenglass to Hardknott Fort passed directly through the ground now occupied by the festival. At Krankenhaus 2025, you can follow in Roman footsteps – with a bit of coal and steam assistance from the Ravenglass And Eskdale Railway –  in a walk up to Hardknott Fort, guided by artist, ecologist and fell runner Rob St John with a bit of help from writer and Quietus co-founder Luke Turner. The circular walk is 6.75 miles (3.5 hours walking time) and is mostly gentle with a steep incline as we reach Hardknott Fort. If you book the 3.10 pm train back, we will have time for a pint at the Woolpack Inn and maybe a paddle in the River Esk at St Catherine’s Church stepping stones. If you would like to get back to Muncaster Castle earlier, book the 2.10 pm return train and instead of stopping at the Woolpack Inn, you can continue along the country lane back to the station. Pick up a leaflet on the walk from Festival HQ.

Taking part in this walk is entirely at your own risk. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing for the conditions (some sections may be boggy after rain) and bring your drinks and snacks. Please bring any medication you may need.
