Bill is a renowned authority on his native Lakeland – a prizewinning writer and photographer with over 30 books published on the Lakes and its wild topography. His book Complete Lakeland Fells was the first to detail all the Lakeland Fells in a single volume – the full round of these tops is now known as “Doing the Birketts”. With his rich climbing and walking heritage, Bill is part of the “Birkett climbing dynasty”. His family has, through three generations, done much to influence climbing and mountaineering standards from the 1930s to the present day. At Krankenhaus, Bill will be talking about the Lake District, its mountains and the festival’s fellside setting.
