About Stereolab

Stereolab are an influential Anglo-French avant-pop band formed in London in 1990 by guitarist Tim Gane and vocalist Lætitia Sadier. Emerging from the underground indie and experimental scenes of the early 1990s, the group quickly became known for their distinctive fusion of krautrock motorik rhythms, vintage electronic sounds, lounge music, jazz, post-rock, and melodic pop songwriting. Their music blends analogue synthesisers, hypnotic grooves, dual-language vocals, and politically charged lyricism into a sound that feels both nostalgic and futuristic.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Stereolab established themselves as one of the most innovative and critically acclaimed bands in alternative music. Albums such as Transient Random-Noise Bursts with Announcements, Emperor Tomato Ketchup, Dots and Loops, and Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night showcased their constantly evolving style, combining experimental production with accessible melodies and intricate arrangements. Their willingness to blur genres and embrace unconventional structures earned them a devoted international following and a lasting influence across indie, electronic, and avant-garde music.

Known for their collaborative spirit and rotating line-up of musicians, Stereolab’s recordings often incorporated elements of French pop, bossa nova, funk, and minimalist composition, helping define a uniquely “retro-futurist” aesthetic that became synonymous with the band. Their sound has gone on to inspire generations of artists across multiple genres, from indie rock and dream pop to electronic and experimental music.

Following a hiatus in 2009, Stereolab reunited in 2019 for a highly celebrated series of live performances and festival appearances worldwide. Their return was met with widespread acclaim, reaffirming their status as one of the most pioneering and beloved cult bands of the modern era. Decades after their formation, Stereolab continue to be recognised for their creativity, innovation, and enduring contribution to alternative music culture.
